Understanding Custom Metal Fabrication and Its Processes

August 13, 2020

The metal fabrication process is highly required in a range of industries, particularly in manufacturing. It involves various processes to create the desired metal structures. Custom metal fabrication uses a combination of techniques with the ultimate goal of achieving the size and appearance of the final product according to the customer’s requirements. Each technique is utilized to add value to the product being fabricated. While there are plenty of processes involved during metal fabrication, the three major ones include bending, cutting, and assembly.

What are the different processes available?

In bending, a specialized machine is used to alter the shape of a metal piece. There are also manual and powered hammers that can be used but there are now advanced tools and methods to use such as the press brakes that can air bend various metal sheets as required. In terms of cutting, custom metal fabrication usually use torches and laser cutters. Cutting is often regarded as the most crucial part of the metal fabrication process, requiring highly skilled workers and an expert supervisor to ensure accuracy of part or product specifications. Lastly, all the metal pieces are fixed together during assembly using either adhesives, fasteners, riveting, or welding.

Other methods that can be used during custom metal fabrication include shearing, seaming, stamping, and corrugated techniques that add more strength to the metal piece for its intended application. The key processes identified earlier go through stretching to some extent for the materials to address the challenges of regular or standard designs. These activities need a team of dedicated and skilled professionals such as blacksmiths, welders, ironworkers, cutters and more. So, you might be wondering how to get all these services at one shop - no need to worry because Baseline Custom Fabricating provides all these services and more.
